Modern is an integral part of the 2020 Magic Online Champions Showcase this Saturday, with both a pod and the finals being in the format.
Danish Kim Ströh qualified by winning the Modern Showcase and has the best Modern win rate of the competitors, but that doesn't automatically make him the favorite.
"I was happy when I found out the format was Modern because it's the format I'm the most comfortable playing, but there are players that have played a lot more matches than me," Ströh tells manaecho.com.
Adult life has made him play less Magic than he used to. Now he mostly practices for tournaments.
While he has been able to get in 30-40 matches in Modern Leagues as preparation before decklist submission this Monday, he is yet to do any Zendikar Rising testing. He hasn't had a chance even to play the format.
"I'll do a few Sealed Leagues to familiarize myself with the cards and then join some Draft queues. I had hoped the format would be Modern Horizon or Cube, so it was less of an advantage for the Limited grinders."
Fellow Dane Christoffer Larsen is also qualified for the MOCS, and the Ströh got to experience Larsen's qualification first hand.
"I was actually living together with Christoffer when he qualified for this tournament. He came barging into my room in the middle of the night, celebrating," Ströh remembers.
He had hoped the MOCS would be played at Wizards of the Coast in Seattle but have to settle with playing the tournament online, during the nighttime in Denmark.
"It has been a while since I've not slept at 10-11 pm, so that will be a challenge," Ströh notes.
